Digital Overload

A few days ago I read an interview on Wired magazine's website.  The topic was "digital overload", and the person being interviewed was Maggie Jackson.  In the interview, Jackson says that paying attention isn't a simple act of self-discipline, but a cognitive ability with deep neurobiological roots.  These roots are being destroyed by all of the electronic devices that we now are tethered to, along with their applications.

Performance Appraisals - Are They Effective?

I've been spending a lot of time lately writing end of year performance
appraisals.  Studies show that this is #2 on any manager's list of tasks that
they dislike.  Firing someone is #1.

Comments from "Johnny Bunko" Breakfast in Austin

This Saturday morning was a bit different for me.  I got to meet with four others over coffee to discuss Dan Pink's book "The Adventures of Johnny Bunko". The group was diverse-two women, three men.  Janet is a teacher, Les is a youth minister, Nicole is a freelance photographer and Brandon is in product marketing.

Bad Managers Are Expensive

According to a Robert Half International survey that was just released, employee retention is still a top priority for companies, even in tough times.  The other thing that the survey shows is that "bad manager" is the #1 reason people quit a job. In fact, 35% of those polled cited this reason (up from 23% a few years ago).  This was followed by limited opportunities for advancement.  Salary was near the bottom.

Leaders Ask Questions

Several people that have reported to me over the years have said that I take a "Socratic" approach in managing them.  For those of you that aren't familiar with Socrates, you could watch "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" OR continue reading...

Half Empty or Hall Full? Have A Positive Attitude

"If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm."  ~Vince Lombardi

I hope coach Lombardi's quote got your attention.  There is a ton o' truth in it.  When employers start to make staffing cuts, those with lackluster attitudes end up being high on the list for termination.

No Leadership In the US Congress

Rant on...

Well, true to its collective nature, Congress has voted itself another pay raise.  At a time when people are losing their jobs by the thousands, companies are shutting down factories, eliminating pay increases, 401K contributions, bonuses, etc, our Congress wags it's finger at Wall St. and Detroit, then flips off its constituents.

Give and Take-The More You Take, The More You Lose

I've written about emotional intelligence a few times this month, and I just read this press release from the University of Chicago about "Asymmetric Reciprocity to Positive and Negative Acts".  Bascially, if you're nice to others, they tend to be nice to you, but if you are mean, they tend to be REALLY mean to you.

Setting Expectations-Out With The Old, In With The New

With another year wrapped up and a new one about to start, it's a good time to be thinking about expectations for yourself and your team.  Start the new year with a higher set of expectations.  Remember, people rise to the level of expectation.  Set the bar low, and that's what you get.  Set it high, and people will strive for it.  Some will make it, others will not.  If your team is like most, 80% of them are not delivering the results that they are capable of.

Beware The Busy Manager

In a survey of nearly 1,200 managers and directors by the UK-based Chartered Management Institite, they found that more than 8 out of 10 managers struggle to prioritize their work, due to conflicting demands pulling them in all directions. The lack of clarity from their leader results in a great deal of inefficiency and frustration.

Remember Work/Life Balance?

For many, work/life balance is out of balance.  In fact, you may think this concept is a myth.  Our electronic “ball and chain” makes it easy for work to spill over into our life with ease.  I know of senior level people that participate in conference calls and send email at their kid’s little league game.  The space between work and life is disappearing.  With that said...

Emotional Intelligence is REALLY Important

Recently I wrote a blog post on emotional intelligence, calling it "IQ's step brother".  Recent research indicates that this is the single most important skill of a successful leader.  Maybe I should have called it the "older, wiser, richer brother"...

Behavioral Profiles-A Focus on DISC

Variety is the spice of life, and that variety comes in many forms.  One form is people.  We are all similar in design, yet, we are all unique.  As a leader/manager, you deal with all types of people, and dealing with them in the same way is not the most effective way to get their very best effort.

Recently I wrote about Myers-Briggs and how that behavioral profiling tool can help in knowing and working with the individuals on your team.  Now it’s time for the DISC profile.  DISC is an acronym for:

Be, Know, Do-Leadership the Army Way

If you look at the Top 10 selling business books for October 2008, you will find that 6 of the 10 books listed relate to leadership in some way. The other 4 books deal with finance or investing, no doubt linked to the nation’s current economic situation.

Emotional Intelligence-IQ's Step Brother

Emotional Intelligence is described as the ability to identify, assess and manage the emotions of self and others.  As early as Darwin's research, he began to look at this non-cognitive intelligence as it related to survival and adaptation.  Interest in emotional intelligence has grown significantly since the 1990s, with research suggesting that good emotional understanding can lead to increased social effectiveness.

What are some of the characteristics of an individual with high emotional intelligence?

Focus, focus, focus: A Lesson from the movie "300"

In my last post I used Clausewitz and Tim Ferris to communicate the idea of "focus".  By narrowing the point at which you direct your effort, you bring maximum effect and efficiency.  If you happen to narrow your focus on a competitor's weak spot, all the better.  I'm not here to talk strategy, so let's move on.

Using another military example to make the point,  Sparta's King Leonidas eliminated thousands at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. with a small, well trained and focused group.

Don't Add, Take Away : Business Lesson from Karl von Clausewitz and Tim Ferris

Karl von Clausewitz, the Prussian general, and Tim Ferris, author of "The 4 Hour Work Week", are two completely different guys born in different eras.  Yet, both fully understand and appreciate the need for focus.

Tell Me Again, Why Did I Hire You?

The Wall Street Journal recently polled 100 CEOs of large companies what their top priorities were. After the obvious financial issues, the never ending concern over finding the right people to do what needs to get done was the top issue.  A new book, Who: A Method for Hiring by Geoff Smart and Randy Street, offers a solution to improve the odds of hiring the right people.
