Leading the way: Apple creates "iPhone Your Life" site
I bought an iPhone in September 2007, just after the price dropped $100. I got it mainly to keep up with personal email accounts that I have, but over the last 14 months, I've come to love this device. I know some of you will say, "hey, it's just a phone". My reply-NOT!
When Apple made the decision to develop the iPhone, they did what they do best-think differently. The use of a touch screen makes using it more intuitive. We're used to pointing with our fingers, moving, pinching. It's natural. You could argue it's not perfect, but I find it much easier and faster than pressing buttons and a scroll wheel. The fewer buttons, the less intimidated and fearful people are of it. In my opinion, it's a great example of what design brings to the table-taking the complex and making it simple.
Apple knows that this device is MUCH more than just a phone, and with their site and App Store, providing examples of what people can do with it and the benefits it provides. Apple also knows that most people under age 30 use their cell phone for more than voice communication. They text message, get their news, weather, email, check Facebook, Twitter, update blogs and on and on. The cell phone is replacing many of the tasks that people used to perform only while sitting in front of a computer. I'm not in this age group, but I am in this "use" group. My iPhone has almost replaced my computer. I didn't do anything with my Motorola Razr other than talk.
Apple has built a better mousetrap, or at least a better website. They don't offer a gazillion options. They don't offer hundreds of products. They are expanding their customer base with the addition of this 1 device. It's another example of simplicity in design. And if you use their swank, jazzy, cool phone, might you decide to try their computer, assuming you still need or want one?
We can assume that Apple is reviewing technical trends and extrapolating in order to develop their product roadmap. While that is important, what I think is more important is that they are thinking like a customer and leading them to what they believe is a better answer to their problem. It's up to you whether you follow or not.
