Remember Work/Life Balance?
For many, work/life balance is out of balance. In fact, you may think this concept is a myth. Our electronic “ball and chain” makes it easy for work to spill over into our life with ease. I know of senior level people that participate in conference calls and send email at their kid’s little league game. The space between work and life is disappearing. With that said...
Younger workers may not have as much of an issue with this as the older generation. They‘ve grown up with the Internet and are used to being online many hours of the day and night, updating their Facebook page, gaming, etc.
When surveys are conducted on what satisfies people at work, the list typically looks something like this:
- Work that is meaningful or gratifying
- Working with people they like
- Working for a boss they like
- Career development and leadership opportunities
- Work/life balance
- Compensation
Work/life balance usually falls somewhere near the bottom. No doubt it’s important, but it’s not paramount for most people.

Assuming your team likes their work and you, they are probably content. Even so, consider relaxing the grip on your team just a bit. When their tasks and the situation allows, offer a flexible schedule that enables them to work more “entrepreneurially”.
As long as there isn’t a drop in performance, productivity or the system isn’t being abused, you may find an even happier and more engaged group. And you’ll be ahead of your competitors who still demand the old 9-to-5 (somewhat arbitrary) model.
