Here's an example of thinking outside the box...

Today, most companies have a budget for computer equipment, and most have a standard make and model to use.  Some are Macs, some are PCs (to coin a phrase).

What if you needed a new computer and your boss told you that you could buy anything you wanted, as long as it cost less than $2100?  Would that make you feel better about where you worked?

I know that this can add a great deal of complexity to an IT department.  Instead of having a standard base of hardware and software, this opens the floodgates to anything and everything.  Still, if the support costs don't become excessive, I think it can add a benefit to the employee/employer relationship that goes beyond the cost of the computer.
